For the general planning of the western part of Cologne (Ehrenfeld, Braunsfeld and Müngersdorf), the city of Cologne has developed a vision together with the planning office Must Städtebau GmbH. We supported the vision process with an online survey and asked over 3,000 Cologne residents about their perception of the current state of the area as well as their wishes and concerns for future development.

An essential part of the development of Cologne's west is the conversion of the so-called "Max Becker Areal". An urban planning competition is to set the course for the development of a new mixed neighborhood for the site. Through public participation in the target image process, to which the competition as well as the development plan process is connected, problems and conflicts but also opportunities and potentials are to be discussed and crystallized. Due to the Corona Pandemic, the process took place online. In addition to the survey, online meetings were also held.
The results of the survey show that the area is mainly perceived as contrasting. Some participants describe it as pleasant and creative, on the other hand as noisy and gray. The respondents focus on the themes of culture, leisure, greenery and housing, and less on the working environment on site. The existing club culture, cultural facilities and space for creativity are carried along as tenor in many answers. The relevance of these issues is further underscored by respondents' fear and anger of displacement.
